In the Vitality Metamorphosis programme, we want to give you as much theoretical content and knowledge as possible. When we understand the workings and background of the body's processes, it is easier to make lasting changes in our lives. As Aristotle said, "Knowledge is not only power, but also the key to understanding and change." We have also prepared two training sessions on the functioning of the digestive tract and the challenges we may face.

The functioning of the digestive tract and its importance for overall health and vitality

The digestive tract is a key system in our body, responsible for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients and eliminating waste. The proper functioning of the digestive tract is the foundation for overall health and vitality, as it enables the body to get the nutrients it needs to function optimally. Digestion begins in the mouth, where enzymes in the saliva begin to break down food. The food then passes through the oesophagus into the stomach, where stomach acid is secreted to further break down the food. In the small intestine, nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream, while the large intestine absorbs water and excretes waste.

The health of the digestive tract and intestinal wall is crucial for a strong immune system, as the gut contains most of the body's immune cells. A healthy gut wall prevents harmful substances from entering the bloodstream, which reduces inflammation and the risk of allergies. The gut is connected to the brain via the gut-brain axis, which means that imbalances in the gut can affect mood, cognitive function and overall mental health.

The importance of a healthy digestive tract goes beyond just breaking down food. Research shows that a healthy microbiome, made up of billions of microorganisms in our digestive tract, plays a key role in boosting the immune system, managing weight, reducing inflammation and even improving mental health (Turnbaugh et al., 2007).

A healthy digestive tract also contributes to blood sugar regulation and the production of important hormones such as serotonin, which influences mood, and cortisol, which is key in the stress response (Mayer et al., 2014). Studies are increasingly demonstrating the importance of a healthy digestive tract for the health of the whole body, which is why taking care of our digestive system requires special attention.
